October 04, 2024
Welcome to our new blog series, "Meet the Brewery", where we highlight the skilled brewers behind some of your favourite craft beers! As proud partners with many outstanding breweries, we’re excited to explore the people and stories that bring their beers to life. In each edition, we’ll introduce you to a brewery, delving into the inspiration, creativity, and passion that goes into every pint. Today we catch up with Rivington Brewery, founded in 2014 and located in the lovely town of Rivington, Lancashire.
Name of Brewery?
Rivington Brewing Co
Name and position within the brewery of person completing the questionnaire?
Founder.
Can you share the story behind the Brewery name?
Not incredibly imaginative, we're fortunate to live in very beautiful place called Rivington, and so we named the brewery after the area we're in!
What was the first beer you brewed commercially and how did it turn out?
We released two beers, a Golden Ale called Bodacious, and a Saison called Radical. We bottled both of them and sold them at a local Bottle Shop 9 years ago. The Golden Ale was ok, The Saison was diastatic, so ended up gushing all over people sinks once they cracked the bottle open.
Which of your beers are you most proud of and why?
Never Known Fog Like It - our flagship beer, now 7 years old, we've barely changed the recipe, and it still has a bit of a following. Lamb-Or-Genie - we've spent the last year working hard on our Imperial Stouts. We worked with Arpus & Commonwealth on this one, and we were really pleased with how it came out.
What would you say is your signature beer that you brew, brewed by your brewery?
Never Known Fog Like It.
How do you go about naming your beers?
Absolutely no rhyme or reason. What we've watched, listened to, found funny, think suits the style etc.
How do you decide on what beers to brew when?
A lot of the schedule is dictated by the core beers and what the taproom needs. This is then worked in with collabs and seasonal beers etc.
Is there a particular beer style that you feel represents your brewery’s identity?
Hazy Beers! Double Dry Hopped, New England Pales etc.
What is the strangest ingredient you have used in a beer and how did it work out?
Chillies. I was convinced that spicy, fruity porters would be the future. They weren't.
How do you see the “Craft” beer scene evolving?
I still think we follow the US scene quite a bit, and looking over there, I think "Craft Beer" will just become "Beer." People will grow up getting used to drink IPAs, Sours, Stouts etc. and drinking from their local brewery, bar, bottle shop, and it will just be "beer."
How do you stay creative and inspired in your brewing?
The team! Amazing team across the brewery, taproom, design etc. always coming with ideas and enjoying what we're doing.
What’s your favourite Beer (from another brewery)?
Allagash White Burning Sky - Any of their saisons.
Zillicoah - Appalachian Pils.
Russian River - Pliny For President.
If you could have a beer with anyone dead or alive who would it be?
Stephen Fry!
